STEPS CHAI PROGRAM

Clinton HIV/AIDS Initiative Pediatric Care & Support program (CHAI)

Implemented CHAI project in 32 urban slums in Srikalahasti Municipality, and surrounding mandals in Chittoor District, Andhra Pradesh during 2007- 2010, Supported by Lead Partner Vasavya Mahila Mandali, Vijayawada funding from Cliniton Foundation, USA.Target people are HIV infected and affected children.

Objectives:

To organize services to the children who are infected by HIV. Strengthening the support systems for children infected and affected, Poverty alleviation programs executed through the community based organizations.

Project Activities:

HIV infected affected children were identified and they wear given nutritional support, financial support for going to ART centers, psychological support and clinical services. Monitoring mechanisms developed to ensure the quality of care.

Achievements:

Identified positive children from the families of People Living with HIV/AIDS by sending them for VCTC. Developed rapport with the positive families and created awareness about ART referrals and TB Testing. Developed Adult Positive support groups and children positive support groups. Developed regular visits to Clinics and ART centers. Reduced stigma and discrimination among school children. Developed home based low cost nutritious food preparations by demonstration Each CLHA is provided Nutritional support on Monthly basis. With the help of Travel support CLHAs are regularly visited the ART centre and with nutritional support there was improvement of their health status. By improving their health, all the CLHAs have attended the school and the drop-outs are reduced. Provided counseling and treatment for the Children and their parents for opportunistic infections in the NGO clinics. 588 Children provided Nutritional support49 Provided Education, nutritional support and counseling.41 Children provided travel suppor8 Children provided emergency support12 Children were provided cloths.
